Enrique GIJÓN -- Oaxaca

Enrique Gij6n nació en la ciudad de Oaxaca en 1977. A la edad de 10 aflos se traslada coma migrante a Los Angeles, California. Ahí cursa sus estudios en Hobart Boulevard Ele mentary School par dos atlas, y de ahí regresa a Oaxaca a seguir sus estudios. Sus estudios universitarios inician en la Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad Aut6noma Benito Juarez de Oaxaca las cuales no concluyeron quedando has ta el cuarto aflo. De ahí estudia la lnstructoria en Artes Plas ticas, y despues viaja a especializarse en grabado a la Uni versidad de Kingsville, Texas, USA, asf coma una residencia en grabado en el Taller Sev-Shoon def Seattle Print Art, en Seattle, WA. Posteriormente a su regreso estudia su Lie. Artes Plasticas y Visuales en la UABJO con especialidad en Grabado. Asf mismo asiste a distintos cursos, talleres y seminarios en el Centro de las Art es de San Agustf n Etta, Oaxaca. De 1999 a la fecha ha participado en distintas ex hibiciones co/ectivas e individuates en distintos espacios def pals coma: Galería escuela de Bellas Art es Oaxaca, Galerí a de la universidad de Chapingo, Galerí a Leopoldo Mendez de la Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana de Mexico, Museo Francisco Goithia, Zacatecas, Museo de las Pintores Oaxaqueflos, Biblioteca Andres Henestrosa; así coma en el extranjero: Galer! a de la Universidad Kingsville, Texas, Galería Seattle Print Art. Gijón ha recibido reconoci mientos coma: Premio Shinzaburo Takeda en la Bienal Nacional Shinzaburo Takeda; ha sido seleccionado en el VI Premio Internacional de Arte Grafico, Jesus Nunez, Corufla Espana; seleccionado en la 6a Biannale Internacional Gravu ra Douro Portugal. Así tambien se encuentra en las co/ ecciones def Centro Internacional de la Estampa Contem poranea, Fundaci6n Cf EC, Corufla Espana, Fundación Cul tural Trabajadores de Pascual y def Arte, A. C.; así coma en la Biblioteca Central de la Universidad Aut6noma Benito Juarez de Oaxaca y en el Centro Cultural Cimarron, Mexico Negro, A. C. Actualmente Gijón es catedratico en la espe cialidad de grabado No Toxico y anatomfa artfstica de la Escue/a de Bellas Artes de Oaxaca de la Universidad Aut6noma Benito Juarez de Oaxaca. "En el desarrollo de mi obra con el tema Discriminaci6n me veo identificado ya que de manera personal lo he vivido en varios aspectos de mi vida. La representación de rostros que salen uno del otro como lo universal, un ser único sin dis tinción de raza, sexo, color. Las barreras que coma humanidad se han establecido han provocado calamidades entre pueblos, naciones, hasta llegar a las guerras. Crea en la humanidad y en la capacidad que tenemos coma individuos para reestablecer la cordialidad y decir no a la discriminación."

Enrique Gijón was born in the city of Oaxaca in 1977. At the age of 10 he moved as a migrant to Los Angeles, Cali fornia. There he studied at Hobart Boulevard Elementary School for two years, and then returned to Oaxaca to con tinue his studies. His university studies began at the Faculty of Medicine of the Benito Juarez Autonomous University of Oaxaca, but that he interrupted in the fourth year. From there he studied Plastic Arts, then traveled to specialize in printmaking at the University of Kingsville, Texas, USA, and spent a residency in printmaking at the Sev-Shoon Work shop of the Seattle Print Art, in Seattle, WA. Upon his re turn and later, he obtained his Plastic and Visual Arts De gree at UABJO with a specialty in Printmaking. He partici pated as well in different courses, workshops and seminars at the Centro de las Artes de San Agustfn Etla, Oaxaca. From 1999 to date Gij6n participated in different collective and individual exhibitions in different parts of the country such as: Oaxaca School of Fine Arts Gallery, Chapingo Uni versity Gallery, Leopoldo Mendez Gallery of the Metropoli tan Autonomous University of Mexico, Museum Francisco Goithia, Zacatecas, Museum of Oaxacan Painters, Andres Henestrosa Library; as well as abroad: Kingsville University Gallery, Texas, Seattle Print Art Gallery. Gijón has received many awards including the Shinzaburo Takeda Award at the Shinzaburo Takeda National Biennial. He was selected to participate in the VI International Prize for Graphic Art, Jesus Nunez, Coruna Spain; also in the 6th Biannale Inter national Gravura Douro Portugal. His work is part of the collections of the International Center for Contemporary Print, Fundaci6n CIEC, Coruna Spain, Fundación Cultural Trabajadores de Pascual y del Arte, AC., as well as in the Central Library of the Benito Juarez Autonomous Universi ty of Oaxaca and in the Cimarron Cultural Center, Mexico Negro, AC. Gijón currently teaches non-toxic printmaking and artistic anatomy at the School of Fine Arts of Oaxaca in the Universidad Aut6noma Benito Juarez de Oaxaca. "While working on my woodcut print on the theme of Dis crimination, I found that I identify myself personally with its subject as I have experienced it at various times in my life. The image represents faces coming out of each other as the universal, unique being without any distinction of race, sex, color. The discriminatory barriers that humanity has established have caused many calamities between peoples and nations, Including wars. I believe firmly in humanity and in the capacity we all have as individuals to reestablish cordiality and say no to discrimination."
