Jonpaul SMITH -- Cincinnati

Jonpaul Smith received his MFA and Graduate Certifi cate in Museum Studies from the University of Cincin nati, DAAP. His BA is from Hanover College in Indiana and he also studied fine arts at the University of Wol longong in Australia. Smith frequently conducts visiting artist seminars, recently taught at Hanover College teaching printmaking and photography, and complet ed a residency and exhibition in Budapest Hungary, Paducah Kentucky, and was the working artist in resi dency at Tiger Lily Press in Cincinnati, OH where on completion was asked to be a member on their board. Smith has exhibited widely in the United States and abroad. He has been featured in many prominent solo exhibitions and was selected for "New American Paint ings Juried Exhibition-in-Print," No. 65 along with their 15th anniversary issue. Collections include Cincinnati Art Museum; University of Cincinnati; Purdue University Print Archive; Avalere Health; Kyoto International Woodprint Association; Universiti Sains Malaysia print archive; Art-O-Mat; Hungarian Multicultural Center; Knowledgeworks Art Collection; Hanover College; Lan guage Logic; U.S. State Department; M. L. Greiner, Leo Brown LLC, among others. "I grew up in rural northern Indiana. My Grandmother and Mother canned vegetables from our gardens every year. They would line up these sterilized jars on a ging ham tablecloth covered kitchen table. Once canned these mason jars filled with our hard work were r ady to be set on a shelf, forgotten about until they were need ed. My topic justice reminded me of this delayed reward, sitting on the shelf, earned from our hard work and toil and accessible whenever we wanted it. For many, jus tice is something that has been canned and put on a shelf, and which despite their work and struggle re mains largely inaccessible. We have cliche phrases in our language such as, 'can it' and 'put a lid on it' things said to encourage one to stop talking. It is time we take these jars off the shelf, place them on the table and open them up for all to partake from. In my print I wanted to show a human in struggle/resistance con tained by the jar, which is sitting on a receding check erboard/gingham pattern. The outside pattern is from a handkerchief and the edge border is based off a rope. "

Colocaban estos frascos esterilizados en una mesa de cocina cubierta con manteles de algo don a cuadros. Una vez enlatados, estos frascos de albafiil llenos de nuestro arduo trabajo estaban listos para ser puestos en un estante, olvidados hasta que fueran necesarios. El tema justicia de mi estampa me recordo esta rec ompensa demorada, sentada en el estante, obtenida de nuestro arduo trabajo y accesible cuando la desea mos. Para muchos, la justicia es alga que ha sido en latado y puesto en un estante, y que, a pesar de su trabajo y lucha, en gran medida sigue siendo inaccesi ble. Tenemos frases cliche en nuestro idioma coma "enlatalo" y "ponlo una tapa", cosas que se dicen pa ra alentar a uno a dejar de hablar. Es hara de sacar estos frascos del estante, de colocarlos en la mesa y de abrirlos para que todos puedan participar. En mi estampa, querfa mostrar a un humano en lucha/ resistencia contenido en el frasco, que esta sentado en un patron de tablero de ajedrez/guinga en retro ceso. El patron exterior es de un pafiuelo y el borde del borde se basa en una cuerda."
