Kevin HARRIS -- Cincinnati

Kevin Harris teaches Drawing, Printmaking and Computer Photography at Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio. His recent solo exhibi tions include MULTIPLY, an exhibition in four parts held at Sinclair's Triangle Gallery, Foot prints, an exploration of printmaking and a global exploration of the landscape hosted by the Harmon Museum in Lebanon, Ohio and Da na L. Wiley presents Kevin Harris, the inaugural exhibition of the Dana L. Wiley Gallery. Harris earned a BA from Hampton University and an MFA from the University of Cincinnati. He has also studied at the Barnes Foundation in Phila delphia and frequently attends printmaking workshops at Making Art Safely in New Mexi co. "The title of my woodcut print is 'The Most Powerful Weapon'. The inspiration for its image addressing the right to Education comes from Nelson Mandela's statement, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." The composition is loosely based on Eugene Delacroix's painting, Liberty Leading the People. The weapons in the paint ing have been replaced with pen, pencil and books. The central figure uses a pen to pene trate dark clouds, bathing the scene in light, symbolizing the illuminating power of educa tion. The seven books carried by the trio sym bolize the seven core subjects of education: The Arts, Language, Science, Math, Technolo gy, Social Sciences, and Health and Physical Education. "
